If your computer suddenly shuts down or does not start while the LED is on, the on button may not work. The verification is done on the motherboard, to avoid aggravating the state of your PC, it is better to refer to an expert.

Check the operation of your screen

If you think your failure is coming from the screen, first disconnect any external display, such as a projector, connected to your computer.

If the LED on the display is on, the hard drive or fan is noisy and no image is visible, then try turning off all surrounding lights, and see if there is a bright veil on your screen.

If this is the case, then it is likely that the LCD inverter (component that powers the screens in brightness) of your screen does not work properly.

The brightness is reduced and the screen can be completely black. You can replace it, but it is a very delicate operation.

Eject USB keys or all removable memory

USB sticks or any removable memory device left connected, or CD / DVD inserted in your computer are also to be considered.

In most cases, an error message such as “Operating system not found” appears on the screen. This means that the BIOS tries to reboot from the removable disks instead of the internal hard disk.

Use a recovery disc

If you have error messages and the problem does not appear to come from removable cards or disks or external disks, then you should consider using a recovery disk.

If you have your Windows Recovery DVD, use it.

Alternatively, you can download (from another computer running the same system) a recovery image and burn it to a CD or DVD, or copy it to a USB flash drive.

You will then be able to start your computer with this DVD or USB key, and correct this malfunction with Windows.

If a virus is the cause of this ignition problem. You can copy the ISO image of the antivirus to a USB stick and then launch the antivirus on your computer from it. This way, you will be able to scan your computer and delete all malware, without having to connect to the network.

If you cannot start your Windows: try safe mode.

With Safe Mode, you can undo all your recent changes, such as adding / removing programs or repairing / deleting one of your Windows accounts (if you have more than one) with a virus. These recent changes could prevent your PC from starting normally. If you opt for this solution, be aware that you will need a Windows Recovery CD / DVD.

Put into practice:

For a Windows system prior to version 8, you must press the F8 key when you start your computer. Then, select the safe mode.

Incompatible or faulty hardware

Then, restart your computer.

Also, we advise you to remove all the unnecessary hardwares when starting your PC: hard disk, optical disk burner, or any other such components.

You must keep only the bare minimum needed to start the BIOS.

Here is a list:

  • The motherboard
  • The processor (with its radiator)
  • The graphics card
  • The original RAM bar (remove recently added ones)
  • The power plug
  • The screen (monitor)

Note that sometimes, if a PC does not start is that components are incorrectly connected to the motherboard, and / or that the hardware is faulty.

Also, if you hear a click that does not make sense, hear the hard drive turn (which is normally silent), or if your computer suddenly stops without stopping, then there is no doubt, he is indeed damaged.
